Well I obviously have to cover Saturday first. It looked like being a poor day until Pierre Royale's late charge forced his head in front right on the line . Wild Thoughts was never travelling so perhaps needs soft ground at this level but that meant that I could concentrate on watching Pierre .

It is hugely satisfying to see a race unfold just as you visualised it . Firstly the draw, though the top 4 in the betting were drawn high, for the last 6 years low numbers have had a distinct advantage in this race and so it proved this year with the group maintaining an advantage throughout.

One of the reasons I backed Pierre was his consistent delivery of high speed figures in big field races showing that he could travel and be competitive in a true run race as the Cambridgeshire invariably is, there is always a strong pace with no hiding place and it finds out many horses that have never run in such a race.

So I was pleased to see him travelling strongly in the back pair with Altareq (who ran a stormer to be 3rd at 100/1) and Lauren Young kindly left us some space to challenge between her mount and Crest of Fire.

Luckily I did not watch the Racing Channel coverage as they called Crest of Fire the winner long before the slowmo had them backpedalling.

Today I have had a look at a class 4 at Musselburgh.

The 15:58 over 5f has my old friend Jer Batt as favourite and slight top of my figures but I just cannot trust him. He may bolt up but I just don't trust him to put it all in.

The one I like is Montezuma, he has been a little quiet the last couple of runs but his record at Musselburgh is 221225 including 2 close 2nds off 78. He runs today off 76 and has the able assistance of Paul Mulrennan who I really like on sprinters.

I wasn't expecting him to be longer than 5/1 but he is 17/2 with Bet365 paying 4 places so I will chance a point each way .
