Selections 09/05/2026

Another good day yesterday . Whip Cracker ran very well but as the market predicted the favourite really was well handicapped and 2nd was enough to cover our stake with a small profit.

In the Chester Cup we had another nice win, A Piece of Heaven was well positioned the whole way and apart from a brief panic that the leader wasn't going to stop it always looked like he would get up once they kicked off the bend. The race for him went exactly as I had hoped.

The same can't be said for Berkshire Sundance who was ridden hard from the stalls to get a position but ended up stuck out wide and getting continually bumped and pushed wider by Peakey Blinder who could not keep straight for a couple of furlongs. Oisin finally got him in behind and settled midfield but that early scuffling cost us a place as he was staying on and was just denied a place by a nose. He is going to be well worth a look the next time he lines up over a stiff 2 miles or preferably further.

On to today and the Victoria Cup at Ascot.

This is always a tough race and with 29 runners this year is no different. I had the winner of this race last year at 22/1 with Hickory whose record at Ascot reads 2 wins and 5 places from 9 starts and I am going to go with him again this year.

He is 10lbs higher but ended last year with his two best career efforts off slightly lower and goes well fresh. I would have preferred he be drawn slightly closer to the likely pace from Jordan Electrics but he should still get a good tow in.

I am also going to have an EW bet on The Wizard of Eye, another previous winner first time up in 2024 off this mark. Very lightly raced since, he has joined Tom Clover who has his horses in good form. He is right up next to the pace and hopefully will get a good tow in to the race .

Those 2 are 2nd and 6th respectively on my ratings, the top one, Jumby, caught my eye as he is running off 89 less the rider's claim so effectively 82 having been rated 109 18 months ago, if he comes back to form and the young jockey copes with this cavalry charge he could get placed at 40/1 but there were just a couple too many 'ifs' to make it a bet.

The other race I have found a bet in is the 15:25 at Nottingham where Leadenhall runs. I have been waiting to see where he will turn up after his debut at Pontefract 10 days ago where he looked a bit rusty and was positioned too far back before making eye catching progress into 5th . He comes top on my figures and is 4 lbs below his last winning mark . I like his chances and he is 11/2 with bet365.

I am also having a more speculative each way bet in this race on Degale at 22/1 with Bet 365 (4 places). His last 3 runs have been awful but all have been on the AW and his turf record since debut reads 312, the last of which was a defeat by Leadenhall on 1b worse terms. I am hoping the return to fast turf will spark a recovery on a 5lb lower mark than for that run.
