Selections 08/05/2026

Firstly, the season is still not throwing up many races which means for several days there will be no selections and I have been operating on a 'no email , no selection' basis.

Going forward I will send an email to let you know there is not going to be a selection that day or for a couple of days if I know there is no suitable racing coming up.

So to Chester, I have been looking at the handicaps over the last couple of days but there have been no races where anything stands out at a decent price with a decent draw.

Today though I looked at the two marathon races and the 13:30 race over 10f. The later consolation race for the Cup is just too tricky but the Chester Cup itself at 15:05 is an interesting race. There are a few Irish raiders and my first selection is one of those. A Piece of Heaven has drifted in the face of support for stablemate Puturhandstogether and is now a generous 17/2 with Bet365.

He is drawn 1 which is ideal for a horse that likes to lead and is on a fair mark (101) having been beaten only by a handicap blot in the 2024 Irish Cesarewitch off 100 and coming 2nd in his prep for this off 102 on unsuitably soft ground. All his best RPRs have been recorded on a sound surface so I expect a big run today.

My other selection in this race has drifted too (after one of my tips recently won after drifting from 9/2 to 12/1 I am not too concerned), Berkshire Sundance is now 18/1 despite a prolific last 18 months winning 6 times from 9 runs and improving all the time. He has the benefit of Oisin Murphy in the saddle and don't be too put off by the draw. When you run the stats, there is a very slight advantage to the very low stalls (except 2!) but then its fairly even over this marathon trip, I think this is a huge price for a horse proven on turf who ran his PB last time out and looks as though he will improve for the extra 2.5f .

My other selection is in the 13:30 at Chester where there is a hot favourite in Respond and he may well have plenty in hand but at 11/8 he is very short and that means that my selection, Whip Cracker is a very backable 17/2.

With Ryan Moore up and having finished 3rd of 24 last time in the Spring Cup (staying on strongly over 1m) he is in top form and at only 5 I think there could be some improvement left over this trip.

I am going to break my 10/1 minimum for each way betting here as Bet365 are paying 4 places and he is 17/2 with them. Looking at the field I will be very disappointed if he doesn't make the frame.
