A bit disappointing yesterday with Fireblade getting upset in the stalls and not running. However, the way the winner bolted up, getting our money back may have been a result!

Now the sprint.

Firstly let me say that the draw bias was inexplicable and more severe than I have ever seen at York. The high numbers were beaten fully 7 lengths with 8 of the first 10 home drawn in single figures ( the 3:30 6f sprint was won by stall 1 from stall 2 and again, high numbers had no chance so this was the track not a pace thing).

What makes it even more inexplicable was the Going Stick readings of 5.6 Far, 5.9 Middle and 6.0 Stands side should have meant the high numbers were on faster ground.

Strike Red was 2nd home outside the single figure drawn horses so I will not be giving up on him as that was a pretty good run under the circumstances. I will also keep an eye on Woven who was first home in 7th of the high numbers and was right up there on my ratings.

Finally for yesterday, Fox Journey ran a cracker travelling well and for a brief moment I thought he was coming to win the race before the well backed favourite dug in.

On to today. Two races interest me , firstly the 5f sprint at 14:20. After yesterday we must assume that low numbers will have the advantage (plus Copper Knight, a real speedball from the gates is drawn in 4) and luckily the two that I fancy are drawn low.

Now, I rarely back favourites but sometimes one comes along that fits every criteria and is still a reasonable price. Air Force One is in that category. He won last time out at Beverley and though only by a head he was nowhere near all out and he is only 2lbs higher today. That race was a trappy one with I'm Next (2nd) winning next time out and Corolla Point on a hat trick and fancied again today going on his price.

He loves York and his C&D record reads 1293, all in big fields and will get a nice tow into the race from Copper Knight so I am backing him at 4/1 with Bet365.

Now, speaking of I'm Next, beaten a head by Air Force One he then won comfortably at Beverley before disappointing when turned out very quickly at Musselburgh. At 25/1 I am prepared to forgive that run and take a chance that at 4 years old he may have a little improvement in him this year.

The only other race I took a look at is the 1m race at 14:55. This is another race where a low draw is important and the two that stand out for me on my ratings, combined with form and draw are Mirsky (10/1), who won the Thirsk Hunt Cup for us and is only 3 lb higher today and Walsingham(16/1), a very progressive stablemate of Mirsky.

First Mirsky , as I say, he is only 3lb higher than for his last win when he travelled strongly and saw off a late challenge from the favourite. With his draw I think he will go very close again today. Sea Force was 3rd that day and is a very hot favourite today based on an assumption that he would have won had he got a clear run. He was indeed hampered but at 9/4 v 10/1 I am happy to stick with Mirsky each Way.

Now Walsingham , with 4 wins and a place from 6 runs ( the only other run was in desperate ground) he is very progressive and the manner of victory in his last race would indicate there is plenty to come and again with Bet365 paying 5 places I will take the chance that there is indeed improvement to come.
