Selections 15/05/2026

Yesterday was just one of those days with none of the horses really firing, Mirsky was particularly disappointing as he travelled into the race strongly and was bang there two out before stopping very quickly and finishing well down the field.

Air Force One missed the break and was never in with a chance after that.

Today there is only one race where I fancy a bet, the 14:55 at York.

A number of York regulars are involved and Tony Montana looks weighted to go close being on the same mark as when a head 2nd in this race last year. He was a very respectable 6th in the Spring Cup first time out this season and that should see him spot on for this.

He is well drawn too which is key over this trip at York. He is a bit short at 4/1 but that reflects his chances and the stable are flying.

In the same race I am having a speculative each way on Financer at 33/1. He is 2lbs below a winning mark, has run well at the track and ran well at Ripon on reappearance, I can see him running into one of the 5 places offered by Bet 365.

Fingers crossed that we have a bit more luck today.

Selections 14/05/2026

A bit disappointing yesterday with Fireblade getting upset in the stalls and not running. However, the way the winner bolted up, getting our money back may have been a result!

Now the sprint.

Firstly let me say that the draw bias was inexplicable and more severe than I have ever seen at York. The high numbers were beaten fully 7 lengths with 8 of the first 10 home drawn in single figures ( the 3:30 6f sprint was won by stall 1 from stall 2 and again, high numbers had no chance so this was the track not a pace thing).

What makes it even more inexplicable was the Going Stick readings of 5.6 Far, 5.9 Middle and 6.0 Stands side should have meant the high numbers were on faster ground.

Strike Red was 2nd home outside the single figure drawn horses so I will not be giving up on him as that was a pretty good run under the circumstances. I will also keep an eye on Woven who was first home in 7th of the high numbers and was right up there on my ratings.

Finally for yesterday, Fox Journey ran a cracker travelling well and for a brief moment I thought he was coming to win the race before the well backed favourite dug in.

On to today. Two races interest me , firstly the 5f sprint at 14:20. After yesterday we must assume that low numbers will have the advantage (plus Copper Knight, a real speedball from the gates is drawn in 4) and luckily the two that I fancy are drawn low.

Now, I rarely back favourites but sometimes one comes along that fits every criteria and is still a reasonable price. Air Force One is in that category. He won last time out at Beverley and though only by a head he was nowhere near all out and he is only 2lbs higher today. That race was a trappy one with I'm Next (2nd) winning next time out and Corolla Point on a hat trick and fancied again today going on his price.

He loves York and his C&D record reads 1293, all in big fields and will get a nice tow into the race from Copper Knight so I am backing him at 4/1 with Bet365.

Now, speaking of I'm Next, beaten a head by Air Force One he then won comfortably at Beverley before disappointing when turned out very quickly at Musselburgh. At 25/1 I am prepared to forgive that run and take a chance that at 4 years old he may have a little improvement in him this year.

The only other race I took a look at is the 1m race at 14:55. This is another race where a low draw is important and the two that stand out for me on my ratings, combined with form and draw are Mirsky (10/1), who won the Thirsk Hunt Cup for us and is only 3 lb higher today and Walsingham(16/1), a very progressive stablemate of Mirsky.

First Mirsky , as I say, he is only 3lb higher than for his last win when he travelled strongly and saw off a late challenge from the favourite. With his draw I think he will go very close again today. Sea Force was 3rd that day and is a very hot favourite today based on an assumption that he would have won had he got a clear run. He was indeed hampered but at 9/4 v 10/1 I am happy to stick with Mirsky each Way.

Now Walsingham , with 4 wins and a place from 6 runs ( the only other run was in desperate ground) he is very progressive and the manner of victory in his last race would indicate there is plenty to come and again with Bet365 paying 5 places I will take the chance that there is indeed improvement to come.

Selections 13/05/2026

Firstly, welcome and good luck to all the new followers that have come from the newly created FB page.

Today is the first day of York's Dante meeting, one of my favourite meetings at the best course in the country and I have a few selections at nice prices,

In the 12f handicap at 14:20 there is a hot favourite from Willie Haggas's yard in Klassleader and he does look to have a strong chance. However, its his first run of the year and the trainer is patient with his improvers so today may be the day to take him on. At 14/1 with Bet365 (paying 4 places) I like the look of Fireblade.

Running off the same mark as when beaten a short head over 2m at this course last year he had a nice pipe opener 3 weeks ago at Pontefract over an inadequate 10f. He likes to race prominently which is an advantage here and showed when winning over 12f at Leicester and winning a very slowly run 2m race on Shergar Cup day at Ascot that he has plenty of tactical speed ( he is a full brother to Cracksman).

In the 6f cavalry charge at 14:20 the draw is very influential. There is a marked advantage to be towards the rails compared to down the centre. In 103 6f races with fields of a similar size to today's 22 runners 46% of winners came from the lowest 3rd of the draw, 34% from the highest and 20% from the centre.

Pocklington looks likely to get a fairly uncontested lead on the far side from stall 7 and American Style in 22 will undoubtedly blaze a trail down the stand side but Desert Falcon from stall 14 is also a real speedball and Fast Track Henry from 16 likes to race prominently also so I expect them to force the pace and expect high numbers will be bang there.

With all that pace around him, and having proved his wellbeing by winning for us last time out, I like the chances of Strike Red at 16/1 with Bet365 (6 places).

Having gone up 3lb for what was quite a comfortable win last time he gets in off 89 so remains well treated considering that from 8 runs over C&D he has won twice off 92 & 93 and was 2nd off 93 in a valuable big field handicap at the Ebor meeting in 2024.

I am hoping he can get a nice sit just off the pace and pounce in the final furlong.

The final selection is in the 17:15 where I like the chances of Fox Journey.

He has dropped to a mark 12lb below his last win in 2024 after an uninspiring season last year and there was a strong hint that he may be coming back to form when he ran a fine race to finish 2nd in a competitive race at Musselburgh last month , probably taking it up a little early and just being run out of it late on. The other 4 horses in the top 5 that day have all run since with finishing positions of 2122 respectively so the form has held up well.

His only other run at York saw him place 3rd of 15 so the course suits.

On a final note. My rating system is designed for handicaps only but I am trying it out on pattern race sprints to see if it is as successful.

Today at York in the Group 2 Minster Stakes at 15:30 it highlighted Time for Sandals ( 4/1 fav) and Aramram 8/1. Both ran in the same race last month at Newmarket and were drawn in the wrong place. Had Aramram been drawn low that day he would have won and Time for Sandals ran well though clearly needing it.

I am not confident enough yet in the system to put these as selections but will be keeping an eye on them and one will go in my ITV7!
